Can CBD Help With Anxiety?

CBD and its popularity have hit center stage as a prominent benefit to one’s health and wellness…and for good reason.  Let’s face it, nearly 1 in 5 adults deal with some form of anxiety, and the over-the-counter drugs prescribed for it can have worse side effects than the anxiety itself.  Though scientific research is still trying to catch up with real life endorsements, a 2018 study revealed that anxiety is one of the top 3 reasons people use CBD, along with depression and pain.

How Does CBD Help With Anxiety?

Anecdotal evidence for how CBD aids with anxiety is hard to ignore, and though limited, there is some solid scientific research to back it up.  In a 2011 article published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH.gov), “Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is one of the most common anxiety conditions with impairment in social life. Cannabidiol (CBD), one major non-psychotomimetic compound of the cannabis sativa plant, has shown anxiolytic effects both in humans and in animals.”  In a similar study, 79% of participants reported that their anxiety subjectively decreased when taking CBD regularly.

While research is still being gathered, CBD is thought to ease anxiety by helping the body process serotonin by binding to and activating a serotonin receptor, a hormone and neurotransmitter that plays a role in regulating emotions, which can result in a calming effect.

While there are a lot of positive reports from people using CBD for anxiety, as with any medicine, its effect can vary based on your personal ailments.  For more in-depth scientific research, running a search for “CBD and anxiety” at NIH.gov is a great place to start.  If you have a personal experience with CBD and anxiety, tell us, share it, you are not alone.
