Equine CBD Education

Face it, you love your horse. If they could fit on the bed, you’d probably let them sleep with you.  Here at Botanic Balance we get it, for we are all diehard animal lovers just like you. Their health is as important to us as our own, which is why we’ve developed a Premium Equine CBD Oil specially formulated just for them.

Research has taken center stage on the health benefits of taking Cannabidiol (CBD) as part of a person’s regular diet, and there is no exception when it comes to your horse. CBD is a natural, safe and affordable option that may help them with many common problems, including inflammation and stiff joints, stress and anxiety, and digestive issues.

You may have considered or are already supplementing your horse’s diet with a CBD product, which we applaud. But is it the right product. Not all CBD products are created equal, which is why we advocate you doing your homework. Is it organic? Has it been tested? Though CBD is rapidly gaining acceptance, The USDA does not officially regulate CBD products as of yet, so it’s important to only buy CBD products from a trusted source, and only consider CBD oil that is THC-Free and lab certified.

At Botanic Balance, you can rest assured that all of our Premium Equine CBD Oil products are:

  • THC-Free to Eliminate Any Chance of Psychoactive Effects
  • 100% Natural Ingredients with No Artificial Flavors, Additives or Preservatives
  • Non-GMO, Derived Exclusively From 100% Organic Colorado-Grown Hemp
  • Lab Tested and Certified to Verify Product Quality, Purity and Potency
  • Flavorless for Horses with Picky Palates
How does CBD work?

The Endocannabinoid System

Just like people, horses have what’s called an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates certain body functions such as pain, inflammation, mood, sleep, appetite, and the immune system.

Your horse’s body actually produces cannabinoids like CBD to aid the ECS in controlling certain functions, giving them the innate ability to process, metabolize, and utilize these cannabinoids. Supplementing a horse’s diet with hemp CBD can in a sense make them a healthier version of themselves, meaning that they can benefit from CBD in much the same way as you.

Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout a horse’s body, including the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. Though it performs different tasks in each location, the goal is always the same: homeostasis, a biological process which maintains balance in the body, allowing for a stable internal environment. Your horse already produces cannabinoids like CBD, but often it doesn’t produce enough, especially as they age. CBD helps stimulate the ECS system, which can allow your horse to heal from within.

Hemp Seed Oil is not the same thing…

Don’t confuse hemp CBD oil with hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil may be a great nutritional supplement, but it does not possess any CBD properties, not even a trace.

Is CBD safe for horses?

Is CBD Safe For Horses?

The fact that CBD continues to receive national recognition as a health benefit is not an anomaly.  Every day new studies are solidifying its promising ability to aid in improving a wide range of ailments in humans, but is CBD safe for horses?

Anecdotal results have been highly favorable for both mental and physical ailments in the equine world, and with Kentucky Equine Research (KER) beginning new studies on CBD and its effect on horses, we are sure to see this research trend continue.

The bottom line is, the use of hemp CBD oil on horses has shown to be well-tolerated, with virtually no side effects even when administered larger doses, unlike most conventional medications.  While CBD is quickly becoming a well-recognized choice in relieving mental and physical ailments, a conversation with your veterinarian first is always recommended.

CBD benefits for horses

Benefits of CBD for Horses

The use of CBD to benefit horses in the equestrian world is quickly gaining the recognition it deserves, and for good reason.  CBD oil doesn’t just mask the problem, but rather it aids your horse’s self-regulatory system to allow them to heal from within, an enormous benefit over most prescribed medications.

Specific health benefits of hemp CBD oil for your horse, available from studies in both humans and animals include:

Inflammation Associated with Joint Pain, Arthritis, Desmitis and Laminitis

Due to the inherently active lifestyle most horses lead, inflammation and the ailments it fosters are hard to avoid.  With age, it is not uncommon for horses to suffer from joint pain, especially in the fetlock and knees due to degeneration.

Just like us, horses have a vanilloid receptor, which is a neuron that controls pain and swelling in our bodies.  Hemp CBD oil can help alleviate these bodily pains and inflammation by impeding this receptor from “turning on”, thus preventing it from relaying pain and inflammation signals to the brain.

Hemp CBD oil may help relieve these everyday aches and pains and improve your horse’s overall mobility by reducing the soreness associated with these discomforts.

Horse Stress and Anxiety

Hyper-sensitivity, separation anxiety, loud commotions and unfamiliar settings are some of the primary causes of stress and anxiety in your horse.

Understand these are natural responses, but CBD may help counter these reactions as it can trigger the release of serotonin and dopamine, two neurotransmitters associated with mood and temperament.  The release of these neurotransmitters can induce a calming effect that can help them through these strenuous situations.

Since horses also have an ECS system that regulates these neurotransmitters, the same calming effect may be experienced by them from the use of hemp CBD oil much like we do.

Horse Digestive Health

When changes in your horse’s feeding habits occur, it’s often difficult to diagnose the reasoning behind it.  The primary causes for a decrease in appetite are poor digestion and nausea, which can originate from a wide array of health concerns, including leaky gut, colic, bloating and bowel blockage.

CBD oil may help these digestive issues by soothing your pet’s nervous system and digestive tract by reducing inflammation caused by tension.

The USEF and Cannabinoids

The USEF has strict horse competition rules regarding medicating your horse prior to an event, and as of September 1, 2019, cannabinoids are included in this list.

Directly from the horse’s mouth- “The USEF Equine Drugs and Medications Rules prohibit cannabidiols (CBD) and their metabolites. CBD, both natural and synthetic forms, are likely to affect the performance of a horse due to its reported anxiolytic effects. This substance is no different than legitimate therapeutics that effect mentation and behavior in horses. It is for these reasons that USEF prohibits CBD and all related cannabinoids. Horses competing under USEF rules who test positive for natural cannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids and other cannabimimetics will be considered in violation of GR4 beginning September 1, 2019.

While the USEF admits CBD may relieve horse anxiety during an event, CBD is completely non-psychoactive, and even though all our products are THC-Free, it is best to err on the side of caution when it comes to giving your horse any CBD in the weeks prior to an event.

CBD dosage for horses

Every Horse is Different...

Just like each horse reacts differently to certain bridles and bits, the same goes for the supplements and medicine you may give them.  With this, it’s important to become familiar with how your horse responds to CBD.

CBD Dosage

You will find articles recommending a wide range of CBD daily dosages for your horse, and while we suggest administering 0.5ml per 250lbs. of your horse’s body weight 1 to 2 times a day, this is a guideline and not a prescription.  The FDA has not yet established dosage guidelines on CBD products, which is why we can only suggest dosage based on experience and anecdotal results.

Botanic Balance is one of the few companies that includes a graduated dropper to help you easily regulate every dose. As with any new supplement, it is recommended you consult with your veterinarian first.

CBD Side Effects

We understand, you want to know what negative side effects your horse may experience from taking CBD. The truth of the matter is, to date hemp CBD oil has not been linked to any major side effects or negative health problems, even in studies that involve taking higher doses.

What you will want to be cognitive of when choosing a CBD product for your horse is make sure it does not contain THC, the psychoactive property found in marijuana.  This is why our Premium Equine CBD Oil is made exclusively from pure organic hemp, and is lab tested and certified to be completely THC-Free.  In fact, all our lab results are included as images on the product page.  Simple. Honest. Transparent.

The Bottom Line

Studies on the effects of CBD on humans are at the forefront of medical research, but are limited when it comes to the equestrian world.  This being said, the anecdotal evidence from horse owners has been beyond promising, with signs of long-term benefits for both physical, mental and emotional ailments.

Hemp CBD oil has been around for many years, and has shown to be both safe and effective in people and animals alike.  From various health issues to overall wellness, we recommend our Premium Equine CBD Oil for horses of all sizes, shapes, ages and breeds.
